Pumpkin Paint
It's coming on Fall and the pumpkins are appearing at the store. A great activity for those infants is to grab those little pumpkins and some tempura non-toxic paint and them dip their hands in the paint and then grab a hold of the pumpkin. They will get to explore the bumpy texture of the pumpkin and how slick it can be with the pumpkin on it. We also had them glue cut-out eyes, nose and a mouth on (we cut them and put glue on it, and had the baby stick it where they wanted) to create their own jack-o-lantern! This can be a messy project. If you don't have a smock, just have them paint with out clothes on and make the clean up easier! Talk about what color the pumpkin is and what they might be experiencing. For those babies who aren't sure about textures and won't dip their hands in paint, take it slow with them and have them just hold the pumpkins so they get used to it and then try again with the paint.

Color with Big Crayons
This is a low mess project for any child able to sit at a table/high chair. This is a wonderful activity for those fine-motor skills they need to develop and help us with our grip strength, controlled movements and eventually hand-writing skills. Have your child color on a blank piece of construction paper or copy paper so they can create a drawing as unique as them. In order to keep it low-mess, teach you child that crayons are only for coloring on paper by demonstrating it to them first. As the pictures demonstrate below, they probably won't hold it the correct way first, but let them just explore how to hold it for a few times and then start to correct how they are holding it. Then give them expectations from the start (yes, even the little 6 month old) and let them know what will happen if they color (purposefully) on anything else but paper. For example, "Crayons are so much fun to color on paper with. If you choose to color on anything else then we will have to stop coloring for today." You give the child one chance and remind them that we color on paper and then after that take the crayons away and say, "We can try coloring tomorrow because we aren't making a good choice of where to color." Always remember to get excited about coloring and your child will also become excited to color!

Here you will find some of the projects I have done. There will be some very messy projects and some no-mess projects. I will even put up the ones that didn't work for me so well, but you might find a way to make it work.
